A Welcome Message to Paintball Field Owners.
We are dedicated to making this area useful to field owners. We feel that the field owners are the lifeblood of the sport and are generally unappreciated loners of the paintball business world. I have run a successful (profitable) paintball field for five years. I recently sold it and "cashed out" of the paintball field business, but I learned many valuable tricks and hard business lessons along the way. I have organized and held seven successful paintball tournaments and I have had 10,000 people come through my two fields (all while holding a full-time job). I have hired, trained and fired many referees and helpers. I have developed successful techniques for dealing with all types of recreational players, newbie group leaders, and walk-on players. Today I am done with the day-to-day hassles of cleaning guns and goggles, making long drives for paint, missing my wife every day of every weekend, but I still run events, and I still make money doing it without a whole lot of effort. I really feel for field owners because I see so many of them making the same mistakes that I made early on. Hopefully the things that you learn here will help you more than anywhere else.
Where is the Money?
Most
fields are run on a shoestring budget as a side business. Sure there are big
operations out there, but ALL field owners find themselves fighting
against the companies that supply them. Paintball players often think
that field owners are the ones getting rich in this industry. We know better.
The only people in this industry driving fancy cars and making a boatload of
money are the paint distributors and the man selling the insurance. It doesn't
take long for a new field owner to learn where all of the money in the paintball industry
goes - THE PAINTBALLS THEMSELVES. It can be tough competing against the suppliers and
distributors that we buy from. When a distributor gets paint
from the factory for $25-$35/case, then sells it for $55-$75 to dealers, AND ALSO sells it in
his retail showroom at wholesale prices, he cuts out the middleman - YOU. Think about this for a
minute. The "Distributor" sells RETAIL at wholesale prices.
There are only a handful of distributors in the country, and they all
do business this same way to stay competitive. It drives the prices down for
the player, but it KILLS the field owner. Or does it?
Sho' Me the Money!
Remember that no matter what happens to paint prices and
the economy, there is always someone making money. The trick for the paintball field
owner is to find ways to be profitable no matter what happens. In many (most) cases
all that it takes to achieve this is an attitude adjustment. More later.
